John Adams Library copy inscribed on first leaf: "By Tho. Whately Esq." Thomas Jefferson visited John Adams in England in April, 1786, and the two men toured gardens of England’s great country houses with Jefferson’s copy of this book in hand. Adams later noted eight of the gardens they visited in the margins of this volume.
